Sandy’s General Plan: Section 3 - Community
This will be a series of thoughts on our City’s General Plan.
I think it is best to start with this document as the base for any conversation about our city. It is the result of extensive community feedback and expert planning.
Building Stronger Neighborhoods Through Community Identity
As a candidate for City Council, I believe in fostering a deep sense of belonging. Section 3 of Sandy’s General Plan highlights how community identity is shaped by shared experiences, cultural institutions, and recreational opportunities. My campaign is grounded in preserving Sandy’s unique character while strengthening neighborhood ties through thoughtful planning and inclusive community engagement.
Equitable Access to Parks and Recreation
Residents across Sandy deserve access to high-quality recreational spaces. The General Plan emphasizes improving existing parks and ensuring every resident lives within a 10-minute walk of a green space. In District 3, I will advocate for targeted park improvements, better trail connectivity, and age-friendly recreation amenities that meet the needs of all demographics—from children to seniors.
Championing Health and Wellness for All
Health is a foundation for a thriving community. The Plan acknowledges disparities in health outcomes across Sandy and underscores the importance of clean air, active lifestyles, and access to care. As your representative, I will support policies that prioritize environmental health, increase walkability, and encourage active transportation as proactive steps toward a healthier Sandy.
Supporting Arts, Culture, and Civic Pride
Cultural institutions like the Hale Centre Theatre and Sandy Amphitheater are cornerstones of civic life. They also generate economic activity and community pride. My campaign supports expanding public access to arts and events, especially in underserved neighborhoods, ensuring culture is not just centralized but woven throughout the city.
Safe Streets and Connected Communities
The General Plan highlights the need for safer streets through separated bike lanes, traffic-calming measures, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. I support neighborhood-level investments in crosswalks, lighting, and sidewalks to ensure children, seniors, and families can move safely through our community—whether by foot, bike, or stroller.
A City for All Ages and Backgrounds
A vibrant community serves residents at every stage of life. The Plan calls for more diverse housing types to support seniors aging in place and young families starting out. I will champion flexible zoning that allows for accessory dwelling units and mixed-income housing, helping our children and parents stay in the neighborhoods they love.
Green Space and Environmental Stewardship
Sandy’s natural environment is a vital community asset. The General Plan commits to preserving open spaces, implementing water-wise landscaping, and embracing sustainable development practices. I will support these conservation goals, advocate for low-water native landscaping, and ensure new developments prioritize green space.
Empowering Local Voices in Neighborhood Planning
Community design should reflect the people who live there. The Plan promotes “Neighborhood Activity Centers” with walkable access to essentials like food, parks, and schools. I will work to ensure community input drives decisions on development and that amenities are thoughtfully distributed across District 3.
Investing in Resilient and Inclusive Infrastructure
As Sandy grows, we must ensure that our infrastructure grows with it—equitably and sustainably. My campaign supports planning that protects against displacement, enhances stormwater systems, and ensures ADA-compliant facilities citywide. Infrastructure should serve all residents, not just those in high-income zip codes.
A Future Built on Collaboration and Volunteerism
Finally, the General Plan calls for partnerships—with nonprofits, faith communities, and residents—to sustain Sandy’s civic spirit. I believe the City Council must lead by example, creating platforms for volunteerism, youth engagement, and intergenerational service. Together, we can build a Sandy that reflects the values and energy of all its people.
